Queens on Decks Episode #32 Featuring DJ Mel

The first  DJ equipment that she started using was a turntable and from thereon, she just keeps learning and learning until she got to where she is now. DJ Mel got into DJ’ing through his older brother/best friend as he was a popular DJ in their town. She would be the person on the mic hyping people up while his brother plays the music. She is now booked on gigs from weddings to clubs and since she has a whole lot of opportunities, she promised that she would stop turning gigs down because that gig could be her blessing. Aside from DJ’ing, she does tax professionally as a part-time and her advice for DJ’s out there with regards to money is that, make sure to keep separate your personal account from your business account and keep all the receipts that you accumulated from DJ’ing. For DJ Mel, sometimes in DJ’ing it more than just about money, because when she plays a piece of music and she made other people feel good about themselves, then that is a testament that she is doing good which also makes her feel better. DJ Mel’s advice for those who want to carve their path on this industry is to remember that you will always start at the bottom and the only way that you’ll be going is up. Work harder, keep learning, take constructive criticisms, and be humble

Queens on Decks Episode #30 Featuring DJ Nickiee Good Girl PR

High school was the moment when DJ Nickiee decided that she wanted to take the route of DJ’ing. She would collect tapes and CD’s and she’s an avid fan of genres such as hip hop and R&B. Her first touch of the decks was on the Year 1999 when her grandparents bought her a pair of Stanton belt-driven turntables and she would also collect pieces of vinyl, but she believes that listening to music on CD and radio help shaped her knowledge in DJ’ing because after all, DJ’ing is knowing your music. Fast forward, she is now a supermom and a DJ and she does gigs on Friday and Saturday nights. It is a total learning experience for her daughter when she lets her come during her gigs, from setting up the equipment to pressing the buttons. For DJ Nickiee, being a MOM DJ is a privilege because being one makes you more accountable and you have better time management skills, depending on the music that you are going to play, it may take 4 hours for some to mix music, but for mom DJ’s, 2 hours will do.

For newcomers on the DJ’ing industry, one of DJ Nickiee’s best advice is to just love the music that you’re playing, and then when you love the music that you’re playing, you’re going to want to mix it well. Apart from being a DJ, she also owns a PR company together with her team: a graphic designer, bookkeeper, web designer, and publicist. The opportunity does not stop there for DJ Nickiee because right now, she is a radio DJ in South Africa that has almost a million listeners. It wasn’t really planned out but just like her PR gig, she just went with the flow and was fortunate enough to be offered with something that she loves doing.

Queens on Decks Episode #29 Featuring DJ RJ the DJ

As simple as it may sound, DJ RJ the DJ’s moment of enlightenment in becoming a DJ was when a DJ came to her 13th birthday, and that was all it takes for her to decide she will also be taking that route. Shortly after that moment, she started taking classes and after finishing her studies, she became a radio DJ. She had two mentors in her career, one was Robin who was more in teaching her about equipment, reading decks, and getting accustomed to controllers while for Kenny Clips it was about matching her tempos with beats, fade in and out and some other tricks. She can play any kind of genre but her favorite is African House Electro Dance. DJ RJ the DJ has mostly done gigs in clubs but right now, she is most interested in corporate events because it is more chill and she gets to network and festivals because that’s where she gets to have fun and see a lot of people. In the place where she is from, entertainment is an afterthought, which why sometimes you don’t get what you demand because the budget left for the event is what you can only get which is tricky. If you are interested in becoming a DJ, you just have to start now and everything will follow. Meet people, create a network as it will help you establish a presence in the industry and you might also be able to collaborate with other companies and brands. For RJ the DJ, she does not care whether she stands out or not as long as she gets the job done.

Queens on Decks Episode #28 Featuring DJ Staci the Trackstar

DJ’ing has been her full-time job for almost seven years now and she does mostly mobile events but also has some local residence in San Diego. Her interest in DJ’ing started when she used to date a DJ guy who only plays Spanish music so she told him to set up the gears and let her play the music and from there on, she went to DJ school. She took private lessons with DJ Hapa from the Scratch Academy, and also at Global BPM in San Diego. DJ Staci has also been in a lot of conferences and expo and she believes that these events can help your career in some ways because of the information you can get from other DJs from mixing techniques to the latest trends in the industry. Two of the important aspects of these events are networking, meeting other DJ’s and the performance and sometimes she would also be invited to perform which she really loves. She works as a writer for 5 years before she became a DJ and so she was able to utilize her talent in writing through blogging and that became one of her sources in marketing her DJ business.

DJ Staci has already been invited as a speaker on some events and her advice for those who will be doing the same is, make sure to practice and rehearse especially in getting your relaying the right information without compromising your time. As a DJ, you may be used to getting a loud reaction from the crowd when they are connecting with you, but in speaking, it is the complete opposite because when your audience is quite, it means that they are taking notes and they are listening to you which is a good thing.

Queens on Decks Episode #14 Featuring DJ Breezy

Hailing from Nova Scotia Canada, here we have DJ Breezy! She is a sound tech and went to school for it for 9 months and what makes her more amazing is that she sings, plays the guitar, organizes events, and she’s an event promoter. Since then, DJ Breezy has already been inclined to the sound of music as she had been a member of the choir for 10 years and in high school, she took a guitar lesson together with her friends until they formed a band and did a concert every month for half a year. They went on to their own ways after graduation but DJ Breezy decided that she really wanted to pursue music and so she went to Divinity College in Halifax and there, she learned a lot of things from sound production to making portfolios. Her first post-graduation career was as an online radio DJ. It was an amazing experience being a radio DJ but personally, she feels like her potential is being limited because you only play music which is on the top of the playlist and she believes that she can do more than that. She has already played on bars, festivals. The biggest challenge that she faced being a mom DJ is having to look for her child and transportation.

Through volunteering, she was able to create connections with different people in the industry which helped her in getting gigs. After seeing a female DJ playing in Halifax, DJ Breezy felt motivated to work even harder and take DJ’ing seriously knowing that her hometown Nova Scotia is a male-dominated environment. DJ Breezy believes that latching onto her passion for music helped her more than just finding a job, it also gave her a sense of purpose to inspire people in her community knowing that their town is small which puts stress to the people leading to drugs and alcoholism. She is also thankful to have people who supported her along the way because the support system is very important especially when you are an artist. For DJ Breezy, the because thing that you are going to overcome when you stumble or mess-up because this phase is inevitable and this will also help you to become better.

Queens on Decks Episode #8 Featuring DJ Stephanie Stardust

Dj Stephanie Stardust started as a Karaoke singer with a regular job at a hotel. She juggles both these jobs along with her child and with the support of her fiancé and his family — now that’s one kickass mom! After she got cut-off from her regular job, she immediately resorted to DJ’ing considering her experience and love for music. It was not an easy path but 10 years later, she got both her passion and business right at her fingertips. Queens on Decks Episode #3 Featuring DJ CherishTheLuv

DJ Cherish The Luv started when she met an accident while skating on the top of the hill, hearing an intuition voice and got pushed aside. No treatment was working to clarify her memories but not until she heard Paul Anka Lonely Boy on the radio where she was brought back to some moment in her childhood of her uncle. She dove into music like crazy just to get the rush of memories coming back. Music helped her in a way that it would spark her brain, feeling like It was functioning again and she used it to figure out who she was. She started learning, rediscovering about music, took classes, threw Penny parties, and took whatever paid since it helped her in her therapy too. DJ Cherished believed that the best way to win your client’s heart is to play the music that they missed because it brings them back to the old happy memories that they cherished.

Dj Cherish was told that women shouldn’t DJ but that gave her a fuel to ignite more passion and dedication to improve her skills.

Take classes to improve your knowledge and skills about the equipment and always ask the opinions of others about your craft because this way, it will help you correct what you needed to change and improve what you needed to improve.

Always have a redundancy backup plan because DJ’ing is business and part of being professional is to deal with technicalities ahead of time.

Queens on Decks Episode #2 Featuring DJ Lipgloss

DJ Lipgloss’ DJ’ing career happened to be sweet serendipity when she was laid off from her work. She knows that she can work anything so she tried to be a comedian at a live stage which didn’t go so well because of her lack of confidence causing her to freeze on stage. She kept using the moniker Lipgloss, which was suggested by a guy she used to date, after leaving the comedy scene and she decided that she wants to DJ. She was off from work and she decided to go out to the club and play as a socialite; she’d take pictures of her and post it on social media and people would ask her if she was a real DJ. After that, she bought some equipment and she started reaching out to these DJ’s which eventually helped her by giving her tips. Her career started after her friend asked her if she wants to DJ to a club and it wasn’t easy but she mastered it. Her tip on people who wants to DJ is to go for it and be serious about doing it because it is not going to be easy especially the equipment which can be costly. Also, she said the only thing that separates a person who loves music and a DJ is the longevity, a person who loves music can be over from playing songs in maybe in 30 minutes but a DJ can withstand hours and hours without disrupting the vibe.

DJ Lipgloss went from a hotel employee to a comedian and finally a successful DJ through perseverance and willingness and to learn.

She struggled with self-confidence a very long time but she was fortunate to have supportive people who are close to her and she emphasized that in the end, it will always be about how you trust and see yourself that you can do it.

If you want something, then you just have to go for it!
